What Are the Factors Affecting the Exchange Capacity of Water Softening Equipment?
2026-03-17

Whether used alone or as a pretreatment device for reverse osmosis equipment, water softening treatment equipment can be widely applied to various industries. A good set of water softening treatment equipment requires careful attention to its design, selection, and even installation to ensure long-term and stable operation during future long-term use. Today we are going to introduce the factors that affect the exchange capacity of water softening equipment.

    1. Flow rate. Generally, the higher the flow rate, the larger the working layer required for ion exchange, and the effective utilization rate of resin will decrease, but the water production capacity of the automatic sodium ion exchanger will increase. Conversely, an excessively low flow rate will cause the raw water to only exchange ions with the resin surface.
    2. Contact time between water and resin. The longer the contact time between water and resin, the more sufficient the exchange, but the water production capacity per unit resin decreases; the shorter the contact time, the less sufficient the exchange, while the water production capacity per unit resin increases.
    3. Height of resin layer. The higher the hardness of raw water, the higher the required resin layer height.
    4. Regenerant. The salt content of influent water directly affects the quality of effluent water. Improving the purity of regenerant and using softened water to dissolve salt can increase the regeneration degree, and the total content of Na in the salt content of influent water has a great impact on the quality of effluent water. Generally, the smaller the flow rate of regenerant solution, the better the regeneration effect. The more the dosage of regenerant, the larger the working exchange capacity of resin, and the better the quality of effluent water.
    5. Temperature. Increasing water temperature can accelerate internal diffusion and improve exchange capacity at the same time.
    6. Resin. Different resins provide different exchange capacities. Generally, the resin used in automatic sodium ion exchangers for boilers requires a cross-linking degree of not less than 7.
